At one of my favourite places - Vittula Bar, Budapest

Following World War II, Budapest’s District 7, the Jewish Quarter, was basically deserted.  But now Budapest is experiencing growth and revival, and a new type of bar - the Ruin Pub - has emerged from the ruins…literally. Here’s how: People rent the abandoned buildings but do not renovate them, with the exception of adding a bar. Then they bring in artists to decorate the place, and the space is furnished with vintage furniture and eclectic items throughout. One of the bars had bicycles hanging from the ceiling. Another bar had a half of a bathtub in one room and old computers as light fixtures in a different room. These places are entertaining enough on their own, but add alcohol and music, and it’s no wonder this underground scene has become so popular. I guess it’s really not so underground anymore.

Last night, great great punk concert, my first contact with Hungary’s punk scene. After almost not finding the venue I bumped into some punk kids, wandering backyard to backyard until finally ending up at some mixture of squat, youth-centre, rehearsal space and abandoned warehouse. Seemed like a big family meeting, vegan food, people that looked like they didn’t care about the right tattoos and bandshirts (which I witnessed oh so often in Germany sadly), and good tunes in a tiny concert room. First Rosa Parks with their beautifully crafted post-rock tunes, then The Static Age (Chicago) grooving it up, finally Fuseism - the Hungarian Fugazi as I like to call them - destroying it. Good times were had.

While in Budapest we visited two ruin bars, Instant and Szimpla. Szimpla is cheaper, as Instant dictates that you must use their 200 Forint cloakroom – however, as this fee is about 60p, it’s hardly a cost worth fretting over. Outside, only a small street-sign and a plastic curtain point the…
